Aboriginal bark painting by Bunumbirr Bininyuwuy Australia (Aboriginal), 1928-82, depicting the Emu dance
This bark painting depicts the emu dance performed as part of the mortuary rites was collected in 1969. Refer to , “Spirit in Land’ by Judith Ryan, page 111 ” In this dance, participants impersonate the actions of emus which make their nests on the grass plains, where they feed on small white berries from low shrubs. The parent birds take the young chicks with them while foraging for food and track backwards and forwards checking their nests to ensure the snakes and goannas have not devoured their eggs. The painting is in very good condition for its age. Pigment is stable, bark is flat with only minor cracks in it as would be expected from a painting of this age.
