Early Massim steering paddle, with leaf-shaped blade, decorated on both sides with curvilinear design, the tip of the blade reinforced with a loop to reduce the possibility of splitting the blade on hard surfaces. The finial of the paddle has a stylized frigate bird. Steering paddles are not used to propel or row the canoe but rather for steering a sailing canoe. They typically have a much larger and wider blade like this example.
