This image on bark is of the sacred body painting. Aboriginals in different regions of Australia often adorned their bodies with decoration. These decorations were of great spiritual significance and the designs were very abstracted, the meaning of which was only understood by the initiated men. The painting of these designs could only occur under very strict guidelines and only certain initiated men could paint them.
In Arnhem Land the people decorate the bodies of men and young boys during initiation ceremonies. They are painted in tribe/clan totems to the upper body and thighs.
