Maprik Woven Yam Mask

This is an exceptional yam mask from the Maprik region of New Guinea. The Abelam and Wosera people celebrate the yam harvest with elaborate ceremony and ritual. Impressive heads are made from wood or cane or a combination of both to be attached to the top of the yams and bring them to life as human forms. This example is particularly interesting because of the unusual detail such as the full human figure under the woven wagnen and the incorporation of a WW2 naval badge.

Collected in the late 1940s and includes metal stand.

$1400 AUD
