This Tiwi sculpture collected in the early 70s is made from hard ironwood. The very dense timber determines this chunky style of carving and typifies the work from the Tiwi Islands. The bird is often a representation of an ancestral being from the Dreamtime.
Tiwi customary laws embody traditional beliefs about the physical creation of the Tiwi Islands. They also describe the complex intertwining of animals, birds and sea creatures and the laws underlying the close relationships of the Tiwi to their families and their land or “‘country ( 2012 cited Isaacs page 26)
