The Gunwinggu language distinguishes between the different species of kangaroo, of which both male and female are identified by individual names.   Gandagadj ( Kandakid ) is the big male plains kangaroo, who is an important Dreamtime figure and features in many of the ceremonies of the Gunwinggu people living in Oenpelli and the surrounding country.

The artist has depicted Gandagadi in the typical West Arnhem Land style, illustrating the internal organs and backbone integrated with the geometric cross hatching.
