Groote Eylandt  is a small island in the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory.  The people living on Groote Eylandt are called Wanindiljaugwa. The mythology of these people like that of other Aboriginals is a living culture. Myths were associated with totems.  A clan had more than one totem.  These are some of the main totems or dreamings which are often represented in sculptural forms like this carving .
