Jimmy Mijau Mijau 1897-1985, Aboriginal bark painting of two turtles

This bark painting is by Jimmy Mijau Mijau and was collected in 1968 by Jim Davidson . It is of the Long necked turtles known as “Wurduyu”. Bark paintings such as this were made for the guidance of body painters who will paint the Turtle on the abdomen of the dancers performing the Turtle Increase Ceremony. From the chant sung during the Ceremony: The long necked turtle floats in the blood red sea of the Dreaming casting the age old shadow on the sand below. We have seen him moving in his shell through the mangroves like an oldman. We have seen him resting and feeding on the weeds that grow on the great sand bars under the water. We dance the hunting of the turtle, we dance the paddling the paddling, foam and the waves.
