Abelam Yam mask collected in the East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea in the 1970’s. Basket masks are an essential part of the elaborate yam harvest ceremonies and festivals put on by the Abelam people of the Sepik. Rituals associated with yams form the basis of the spiritual life of the Abelam. The yam is the main staple of these people so good harvests are essential to their survival. These masks are made in the lower inland foothills of the Prince Alexander Mountains and down into the plains on the north side of the Middle Sepik River.
