All shields from Central Australia are made from a light softwood and are of an elongated oval shape.  They possess a beautiful symmetry.  These sheilds were covered with a red ochre and then often painted with decoration before ceremony. This style of iconography formed the basis of the motifs and designs used in the early Papunya Tula and Western Desert art movement which only began in 1971.

The shield includes a custom made black metal stand.
