Djambulula Australia (Aboriginal), c1908-60s
Collected 1960s Croker Island, Northern Territory
This artist work is well represented in major Australian collections. Djambalulu was one of the last of his people who knew fragments of an old ceremony no longer performed. He had carried on the ancient designs of his people illustrating the Yiwaidja seaway song cycle, taught to him by his father. The painting illustrates part of this song circle. It is painted with natural pigments and is in exceptional condition for its age.
